Starting research: Synesthesia

FAD Competition

What is does it mean to hear music in colors, to taste voices, to see each letter of the alphabet as a different color? These uncommon sensory experiences are examples of synesthesia, when two or more senses cooperate in perception. Once dismissed as imagination or delusion, metaphor or drug-induced hallucination, the experience of synesthesia has now been documented by scans of synesthetes’ brains that show “crosstalk” between areas of the brain that do not normally communicate. In The Hidden Sense, Cretien van Campen explores synesthesia from both artistic and scientific perspectives, looking at accounts of individual experiences, examples of synesthesia in visual art, music, and literature, and recent neurological research.

The Hidden Sense: Synesthesia in Art and Science by Cretien Van Campen

To start my research I thought I would look into Synesthesia which collaborates the different senses. I was inspired by the exaggeration and hallucination of it, as I do not suffer with synesthesia I thought it was interesting to explore how it could possibly be through imagery.

A little bit of Fringe!

Natives

Inspired by the classic Native American Indian look I wanted to play around with the idea of using fringing in weird and wonderful ways., and instead of using the usual fabric fringe I decided to experiment with black hair extensions reflecting the Native Americans beautiful long black hair. I hope this works!

Stand work – inspired by bones…

Natives

Inspired by the way in which bones are layered in our body, such as the ribs or spine. These pictures are just me playing around with some pleats within pattern cutting.

This was actually a mistake, I had sewn the lines the wrong way which resulted in a reverse pattern. I actually prefer this to the more 3D one!
